2005 WineMaker Label Contest Winners! Dec, 2005

See the creativity and artistic skills shown by home winemakers in the winning labels of our 2005 Label Contest. With over 1,000 varied entries to decide amongst, judging our 6th Annual WineMaker Label Contest was a daunting task. Eventually, after much consideration — and a few glasses of wine — we arrived at this year’s set of winners.

GRAND CHAMPION LABEL
Tim Gerst • Boynton Beach, FL

The King’s Ransom label was created for Tim Gerst’s first-ever batch of wine: a 2005 Riesling. Tim wanted to create a label that was fun and had a personal touch that matched the luster of his wine. The artwork is 100% original and hand-drawn, then scanned into a digital format to add color for printing. Our hats are off to the king of the label contest.
PRIZES: En Primeur wine kit from Bayleys BrewHaHa; Crushendo Santa Ynez Valley Syrah wine kit from Winexpert, Inc.; Yeast coupons from White Labs, Inc.; Gift certificate from Grape and Granary; Viognier wine kit from Cellar Craft International; Crushendo Corvina Classico di Veneto wine kit from Winexpert, Inc.; Gift certificate from Quality Wine and Ale Supply; Array of test kits from Accuvin, Inc.

GOLD MEDAL LABEL
Raphael Shea • Moravia, NY

Scolpire, is an Italian term meaning to sculpt. Shea named the label as an ode to the stream that runs behind his vineyard in the Finger Lakes region of New York.
PRIZES: En Primeur wine kit from Bayleys BrewHaHa; Dry Creek Valley unwooded Chardonnay wine kit from Winexpert, Inc.; Yeast coupons from White Labs, Inc.; Varietal pack from Elite Vintners Corp.; Windbreaker from Schmidt Printing; Gift certificate from Quality Wine and Ale Supply

SILVER MEDAL LABEL
Mike & Angie Staggs • San Francisco, CA

This label of Mike and Angie Staggs is all original artwork. The illustration of Cerberus, the three-headed dog is modeled after the winemaker’s Cairn Terrier. This beast is constantly chasing Bacchus, the God of Wine.
PRIZES: Gift certificate for a Cellar Classic Winery Series wine kit from RJ Spagnols Wine & Beer Making Products; Gift certificate from Bader Beer & Wine Supply, Inc.; Brewhouse beer kit from Bayleys BrewHaHa; Crushendo Montagnac Vieux Chateau d’Oc wine kit from Winexpert, Inc.; Yeast coupons from White Labs, Inc.

BRONZE MEDAL LABEL
Jason & Sheri Weppel • Macundie, PA

Rookie Riesling was named for the fact that it was the first Riesling the Weppels crafted. The label was started with a photograph of a Phillies jersey. The team’s logo was replaced with their own and the “04” represents the wine’s vintage.
