2004 WineMaker Label Contest Winners! Dec, 2004

For the 5th straight year, WineMaker magazine’s offices were flooded with entries for our annual label contest. Here are the top prize winning homemade labels for homemade wine from the nearly 1,000 entries we enjoyed reviewing and judging. Thank you to all who took the time to enter and thank you to our advertisers and retailers who donated prizes to these top winners!

Grand Prize Label
LARAINE WILLKIE, Bellingham, WA
“The labels have evolved as the wine has. We are a family of fishermen and women and are fortunate enough to own property on three different rivers... hence the name, “Three Rivers,” on all of the labels.”
Prizes: Selection Estate Series Crushendo Santa Ynez Valley Syrah 18L wine kit from Winexpert, Inc.; 6-gallon Better-Bottle set-up from Bader Beer & Wine Supply; 50 lb. pail of Straight-A cleanser from Logic, Inc.

Gold Prize Label
BARBARA BENTLEY, Walnut Creek, CA
Barbara is the “official taster and labelmaker” for her husband Rex Johnston’s wines. Now, both the label and the wine have become winners, as Elephant Heart Plum also won “Best of Dessert” at the 2004 California State Fair.
Prizes: Yakima Valley Viognier 16L wine kit from Cellar Craft International; Gift certificate from Wine, Barley & Hops Homebrew Supply; Mosto Italiano Amarone 23L wine kit from Advintage Distribution

Silver Prize Label
MARTY BLAIR, Redwood City, CA This award is the label’s second, as it also took “Best of Show” at the 2003 California State Fair. Marty has been making wine for five years. The label was designed by his wife Eileen Blair and her brother Tim Finnigan.
Prizes: Gift certificate from Grape and Granary; Mosto Italiano Frascatti 23L wine kit from Advintage Distribution

Bronze Prize Label
LAURIE SHELL, Benton, AR This was Laurie’s first label creation, as part of a deal with her father David that netted her 24 bottles of the wine in exchange for the label.
