2001 Label Contest Winners Winter 2001

History, humor, personality and lots of eye-catching art: We proudly present the winners of our second annual WineMaker label contest.

Gold Medal Winners

Joan Huff
Louisville, Kentucky
Joan won honorable mention in last year’s contest with a similarly colorful label. She and her husband ordered some Muscat grapes from California and things went downhill from there. Everything imaginable went wrong. Joan’s husband wanted to pour it down the driveway or use it to fertilize the plants but Joan wouldn’t give up on it. She kept adding things until it started to taste better. When it came time to name her wine, the cat and nine lives theme came up. She had brought it back to life. Joan doesn’t even have a cat. She’s a former art teacher and hand drew the cat on the label.
(Prize: 100 pounds of premium fresh wine grapes from Lodi, California from A1 Wine Grapes, a $25 gift certificate from Maltose Express, a Red Star Yeast selection pack and "Techniques in Home Winemaking" from Vehicule Press.)

Dr. John Cozzarelli
Nutley, New Jersey
John hits the big time again with another great label. This time, it’s a twist on the "Got Milk" campaign using the Mona Lisa as a model. The Mona Lisa is sporting a chef’s hat and a distinct red wine mustache. John simply saw a dairy ad one day and thought it would be a great add for wine. Thus, Got Wine! This texture-rich label was printed on a printable canvas and inkjet printer. The photo came from photo shop and he airbrushed it.
(Prize: Italian Floor Corker from Bader Beer and Wine Supply Inc, a $25 gift certificate from Maltose Express and a Red Star yeast selection pack from Red Star.)

Thomas Mattfeld
St. Peter, Minnesota
Thomas’ fun label is a clever play on Liebfraumilch. The label was the result of a group effort. He commissioned an artist friend, Dan Bernick, to draw the image and a nephew put it all together on the computer. The labels were designed to adorn their entries in the Minnesota State Fair wine contest. The judges were drawn, of course, to the frog as well as the obvious hand-drawn look.
(Prize: One Mosto Italiano Gewürztraminer pure juice kit from Brewmaster, a C02 head space flusher and 2 cases C02 cartridges from Beer, Beer and More Beer, a $25 gift certificate from St. Patrick’s of Texas, and one bag of 50 corks from Flying Barrel.)
